Lewandowski unexpectedly has the opportunity to receive the Ballon d’Or

France Football is considering the possibility of awarding the 2020 Ballon d’Or to Robert Lewandowski.

In the 2019/20 season, Robert Lewandowski was the best player in the world. He and Bayern Munich crushed Barcelona 8-2 on their way to winning the Champions League, along with clinching 2 Bundesliga titles and the German Cup. It seemed like the Ballon d’Or was firmly in his hands, but France Football unexpectedly canceled the vote in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic.

The organizing body believed that the pandemic had affected the players’ performances, making the vote unfair. However, the Spanish newspaper Sport revealed that four years after the harsh decision against Lewandowski, France Football wants to “rectify the mistake” by adding his name to the vacant spot in the 2020 Ballon d’Or winner list.

“No decision has been made yet, but France Football has had some discussions about this issue. Lewandowski will receive the deserved respect for his contributions,” Sport said.

As for Lewandowski himself, the Polish player stated that he is always ready for this honor: “Even if I receive the Ballon d’Or four years later, it’s still a pride. I don’t feel offended and I’m always ready to accept it.”

Even Lionel Messi, the owner of 8 Ballon d’Or titles, has spoken out affirming that Lewandowski deserved to be honored in 2020. Sharing at the award ceremony in 2021, “El Pulga” said, “No one deserves it more than Lewy in 2020. I think France Football should organize and award him.”
