Coach Jose Mourinho has firmly stated, “I don’t believe Italy can win Euro 2024” while also revealing more about his time working at AS Roma.

Heading into the Euro 2024 campaign, the Italian national team has not received much expectation from their home fans. Despite being the reigning European champions, looking at personnel instability and previous performances, few believe the Azzurri can defend their title.

Mourinho emphasized this by stating, “I don’t believe Italy can win the championship, no! They don’t have a talented squad, and I don’t think they will win again.”

I think almost everyone agrees on the favorite contenders to win this year: Portugal, England, France, followed by Germany and Spain.”

After clinching the Euro 2020 championship, the Italian national team continued to disappoint by failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, thereby missing the chance to reaffirm their position. Alongside this, internal discord within the team has eroded the confidence of their fans.

As for Mourinho, the 61-year-old strategist who was sacked by Roma earlier this year has now taken up the reins at Fenerbahce. When asked about his decision to join Fenerbahce, Mourinho spoke about the lack of desire for victory during his time at Roma.

The former Chelsea manager said: “At Roma, I wasn’t playing to win. You always have to say you play to win, but that’s not true. It’s not true, and nothing changed after I left until the end of the championship.

“What we achieved in Europe was above standard, but at the national level, we couldn’t compete. Fenerbahce will struggle in Europe, but domestically, history shows competition between Fenerbahce, Besiktas, Galatasaray, and sometimes Trabzonspor.”

During his two-year tenure at Roma, Mourinho guided the team to become the first champions of the Europa Conference League, and the capital club then progressed to the Europa League final the following year, only to suffer a regrettable defeat against Sevilla.

For the Italian national team, they have one final friendly match against Bosnia and Herzegovina before officially stepping into Euro 2024, scheduled for 1:45 AM tomorrow (June 10).
