Recent sources indicate that there is a possibility of removing automated offside technology from the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany.

Recent reports suggest that automated offside technology could be removed from the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany.

According to The Sun, Euro 2024 might see significant changes in how offside rules are applied, with automated offside technology potentially being completely eliminated from the tournament in Germany.

This development comes after the Dutch company Ballinno claimed that their idea for offside technology was copied. It’s known that the current automated offside technology uses a microchip integrated into Adidas match balls to provide higher accuracy. This chip can detect up to 500 movements per second and alerts the referee when a player commits an offside offense, without the need for VAR consultation, thereby saving time and ensuring smoother gameplay.

However, Ballinno has filed a lawsuit against UEFA and Kinexon for patent infringement, alleging that these companies closely collaborated with Adidas to develop this technology.

Ballinno stated that UEFA unlawfully used this technology and claimed that they were granted a patent in 2011 for a “method and system for detecting offside situations” focusing on a chip inside the football.

After the registration was submitted on April 18, a trial hearing is set for June 3. Ballinno hopes for an injunction that could lead to the removal of automated offside technology. The trial will be overseen by three judges.

Despite this, UEFA appears relaxed about the issue. A UEFA spokesperson told The Sun: “We cannot comment on ongoing litigation matters. However, UEFA is not overly concerned about Ballinno’s registration.” He also added that he believes VAR’s position in the tournament will not be affected regardless of the outcome.
