According to UEFA, England’s midfielder Jude Bellingham has been fined but will not be suspended for the EURO 2024 quarter-final match following his offensive celebration during the win against Slovakia.

In the Round of 16 match against Slovakia, Jude Bellingham was a hero for England with a stunning bicycle kick that equalized the score in the dying moments of the second half. The match ended 1-1, and England went on to win 2-1 in extra time with a goal from Harry Kane in the first half of extra time.

The controversy arose after Kane’s crucial goal. Following the goal, Bellingham performed a controversial celebration. He ran towards the Slovakia bench and appeared to make an offensive gesture involving a kiss and a lewd hand movement.

After the match, Bellingham explained that the offensive celebration was meant as a joke for a few friends in the stands cheering for him. However, UEFA launched an investigation to determine if Bellingham’s actions were intended to provoke the Slovakia team. Fortunately for Bellingham and England, the 21-year-old midfielder will not face a suspension.

According to the reputable source SportBild, UEFA determined that Bellingham’s celebration violated conduct rules but did not warrant a ban from playing. Instead, Bellingham has been fined €20,000, along with a warning that future offenses could result in harsher penalties.

This fine is a small fraction of Bellingham’s €12 million annual salary at Real Madrid. However, the important news is that Bellingham can now breathe a sigh of relief and focus on preparing for the EURO 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland.

According to English media, coach Gareth Southgate is considering tactical changes for the Switzerland match. He is contemplating moving Bellingham to a deeper midfield role, potentially partnering with Declan Rice in central midfield, to allow Phil Foden to take on the number 10 role.
