England Considering Major Changes Ahead of Euro 2024 Quarterfinals
2 min readWith changes in the squad, coach Gareth Southgate is making adjustments to the lineup for the Euro 2024 Quarterfinals.
The entire England squad has been practicing with a three-defender formation, a setup that brought them early success during Southgate’s tenure at the 2018 World Cup.
However, this is the first time in many years that England is training with a three-defender formation in Germany. After struggling to build up play against Denmark and Serbia, both of which played with a three-man defense, England needs changes to overcome a very cohesive Swiss team.
Gareth Southgate may deploy his trusted player Kyle Walker as a right center-back, which could open up a starting spot for Trent Alexander-Arnold. Alexander-Arnold, who fits perfectly in the right wing-back role rather than central midfield, might shine in this position. On the opposite flank, Luke Shaw, who has recovered from injury, may be considered alongside Bukayo Saka, who can play almost any position on the wing.
A significant loss for England is Marc Guehi, who is suspended due to accumulated yellow cards, and Ezri Konsa will be the trusted replacement. John Stones will play in the center, Kyle Walker on the right, and Konsa on the left. This setup brings back memories of England’s defense during the 2018 World Cup, especially with Harry Maguire.
By switching formations, Southgate might field two strikers, a relatively classic English approach. However, the 53-year-old strategist prefers having Harry Kane supported by two attacking players. The biggest beneficiary of this decision would be Phil Foden, who will play in his preferred position as at Manchester City. Jude Bellingham will join him, making fans hopeful that these two players will shine and lead England forward with more convincing football.
Ivan Toney, who assisted in England’s winning goal against Slovakia, shared his thoughts on whether England will switch to a two-striker formation.
“Everyone has to ask the coach. We need to focus on the upcoming opponent, so preparation and changes are natural. I’m not the coach, so even if I like playing with a two-striker formation, I must respect the final decision. No matter what, everyone wants to contribute, and I will give my best when given the opportunity.”
England has two more training sessions before facing Switzerland in the Euro 2024 Quarterfinals match at 5:00 PM on July 6th at Dusseldorf Arena.
