Cristiano Ronaldo faced heavy criticism after the match against Georgia at Euro 2024
2 min readCristiano Ronaldo faced a barrage of criticism and backlash from fans after his reaction to receiving a yellow card during the match against Georgia at Euro 2024.
On June 26 (UK time), Portugal surprisingly lost 0-2 to the underdog Georgia in a match filled with drama, especially surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo.
Specifically, in a corner kick situation in the 28th minute, Ronaldo was pulled back by a Georgian defender and fell inside the penalty area. However, the referee deemed it a dive by CR7 and waved play on.
The 39-year-old forward showed frustration and annoyance at the referee’s decision and immediately received a yellow card for his reaction.
After the match, on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), fans left numerous comments criticizing Ronaldo faced heavily for that incident.
“The biggest crybaby in football,” “He’s crying about penalties again,” “Always complaining,” “All he does is complain,” “He complains and cries more than he wins,” “Big brother has more yellow cards than goals scored in this tournament,”… and many more comments flooded the platform.
Ronaldo played only 66 minutes in this match before being substituted for Goncalo Ramos. However, after conceding an early goal, Portugal couldn’t overturn the situation and even conceded another goal late in the match from a rare Georgia counterattack penalty.
For Portugal, this defeat didn’t carry much significance as they had already secured first place in Group F of Euro 2024 after the second round of matches. Conversely, for Georgia, this historic win marked their first-ever qualification to the Round of 16 in their debut appearance in the European Championship finals.
